For the third consecutive year, Gartner recognizes BigCommerce as one of the top ‘Challengers’ in the eCommerce industry.
Gartner, Inc., the world’s leading technological research and consulting firm, has named Austin, TX’s BigCommerce as a ‘Challenger’ in their Magic Quadrant for Digital Commerce Report for the third consecutive year. Their evaluation was based on specific criteria that examined the company’s overall Completeness of Vision and their Ability to Execute.
“We believe this year’s recognition from Gartner underscores BigCommerce’s ability to provide the flexibility enterprise businesses need to remain agile in today’s fast-paced ecommerce space. With our recent acquisitions of Feedonomics, B2B Ninja and BundleB2B, along with our release of Multi-Storefront, rapid global expansion and our robust partner ecosystem, BigCommerce continues to invest in our capabilities to best serve our merchants. In our opinion, this Gartner recognition reflects this vision and innovation, and we are honored to have made the Challenger quadrant for the third consecutive year.”

As defined by Gartner, a digital commerce platform is a service that allows customers to shop and purchase goods and services interactively, usually through self-service. Customers can access useful information on the platform to make purchasing decisions, and full priced orders are presented for payment based on rules and data.
For vendors to be considered in this Magic Quadrant, their platforms had to be capable of providing an interactive commerce experience out-of-the-box, or APIs to support it, including a storefront, catalog navigation, product pages, shopping carts, check-outs, and customer accounts. Platforms must also offer search capabilities, carts, and price options for product, customer, and order-level discounts. This may require the assistance of sales representatives in some B2B scenarios. Platforms had to be capable of integrating with data, as well as synergy with APIs and customer, product, content, and order functionality.
“BigCommerce is a Challenger in this Magic Quadrant with its multitenant SaaS digital commerce platform. The platform is deployed primarily in North America, but continues to gain traction in other regions, especially EMEA and Asia/Pacific. BigCommerce has clients in almost every industry, but retailers, providers of business and consumer services, manufacturers, sellers of high tech and media companies are its most common customers. BigCommerce is attracting larger clients, some of which achieve sales of over $250 million in annual GMV, but a big majority of its clients average annual GMV of less than $50 million. Companies desiring speed to market (especially those selling direct to consumers) and midsize organizations requiring both B2B and B2C functionality on the same platform should consider BigCommerce, especially if cloud-native, multitenant SaaS and API extensibility are valued requirements. BigCommerce has made three acquisitions since June 2021: Feedonomics (in July 2021), for its channel integration application; B2B Ninja (in February 2022), for its quote creation and management; and BundleB2B (in April 2022), for its B2B account management, sales team support, quoting, invoicing and payments.”

BigCommerce ranked high with Gartner in the following three categories:
- Flexibility – BigCommerce has a cloud-native platform with GraphQL and REST APIs as well as a modular architecture. BigCommerce also offers headless commerce and commerce functionality is made possible through APIs (limited exceptions are related to security).
- Service and Support – Reviewers for Gartner Peer Insights give BigCommerce top recommendations for service and support; “easy” is often used to describe their experiences with using BigCommerce.
- Application Ecosystem – BigCommerce has a vast ecosystem of application partners and most relevant applications have, at least, one native integration. Many of BigCommerce’s partners have created their own adapters, giving BigCommerce users even more options.
